Mikey Drennan opens up about stepping away from football

Shamrock Rovers star Mikey Drennan has revealed the team's 4-0 win over Bohemians last month was when he realised he had an issue with his mental health.

Drennan announced on Thursday that he was to step away from the game until at least the end of the season to try and recover from a long battle with depression. The Kilkenny-native is to move home from Dublin to try and improve his health.

Speaking to the Irish Mirror, Drennan revealed that he knew there wasn't something right after the game in Dalymount Park. Drennan played all 90 minutes and almost scored in the win.

"We won 4-0 and I tried to get up with the team and be happy but I just couldn't. I'll be honest, I walked out of the dressing room and just started crying. That's when I knew it was the final straw and that things weren't right. That was the trigger."

The Tallaght-based team have been incredibly supportive of Drennan, who is under contract with the team until the season. He will play hurling with his local James Stephens club in Kilkenny as he tries to return to full health.

Drennan has been "overwhelmed" with the support he has received since making the news public. "Since I put it on Facebook and Twitter yesterday there's been nothing but support for me. I didn't expect that at all and I want to thank everyone."

"I said I'd talk about it and I hope others do as well. If I can inspire anyone to come out and say it, I'd be happy."
