Mauricio Pochettino wants to build a legacy at Tottenham like Alex Ferguson did at Old Trafford

Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino hopes to turn into a modern-day Alex Ferguson.

Pochettino revealed on Friday that he has verbally agreed to sign a new contract with the north London club that will see him stay with Spurs until at least 2021. The club look set to finish second in this season's Premier League.

The Argentine manager only faced Alex Ferguson on one occasion as a manager. Pochettino, who at the time was in charge of Southampton lost 2-1 to Manchester United in Old Trafford in January 2013.

After announcing that he was to sign a new deal, the 44-year-old was asked if he would like to build a team in north London, like Ferguson was given the chance with United. "He was given the security to build his legacy at Manchester United. I believe we are special too and we can build it here together."

"This club is special. I feel the love from the beginning, from the very first day. I am very happy to be here to hopefully achieve big things. I think the potential is fantastic, with the new stadium. I think the club is coming to a very tough period because we are building a new stadium and we may focus sometimes on that, but at the same time it is very exciting."

Despite drawing with West Brom earlier this week, which looks set to cement Spurs' second place position, Pochettino is loving his time at White Hart Lane.

"It is important for all to know I believe in this club, the players, the staff, the supporters and the people here. This is important. That is why we have decided to stay here. We have made steps in the time we have been here and we believe in more time we can achieve big things."

Tottenham play their penultimate away game of the season on Monday night away to London rivals Chelsea.
