Mats Hummels makes formal request to join Bayern Munich

As Pep Guardiola gets set to say goodbye to Munich, Mats Hummels is preparing to say hello as the Borussia Dortmund player has submitted a request to join the Bundesliga champions.

The fee for the player is yet to be finalised by the two clubs, but according to The Guardian, discussions on the move for the player had already been taking place, as revealed by Karl-Heinz Rumminigge earlier this month,

However, this was the first formal indication from the player that he wanted to leave. He has only one year remaining on his current contract.

In a statement on the club website, Dortmund said “Defender Mats Hummels of Borussia Dortmund has communicated his desire to leave the club in the summer and wants to join the league rivals Bayern Munich next season."

The statement added that no fee has been agreed and that Bayern Munich were yet to make any offer, before underlining that "with Mats Hummels - as at present with all other players from Borussia Dortmund - no exit clause has been agreed and the player is tied to Borussia Dortmund until June 30, 2017."

That part of the statement seemed to warn that they may look to make the player see out his contract, and it wouldn't be the first time that the club has foregone a transfer fee to make a similar point.

The news will come as a blow to a number of different clubs, including Manchester United, who were believed to be chasing a deal for the German international.
