Marc Wilmots sacked after poor Euro 2016 campaign

Belgium have parted company with manager Marc Wilmots after a disappointing and turbulent Euro 2016 campaign.

The manager was openly criticised by goalkeeper Thiabaut Courtois after they failed to win their opening game, and again when they were dumped out of the competition by a dominant Wales side in a match which they lost courtesy of goals from Ashley Williams, Hal Robson Kanu and Sam Vokes

While it was believed that the Belgian FA were struggling to raise the necessary funds to meet the payout clause in the manager's contract, an official announcement on Friday noted that an agreement has been reached between the two parties which will see Wilmots leave his role.

In a statement on their website, the Royal Belgian FA thanked Wilmots for helping the team to rise from 54th in the world to where they currently reside in the rankings, but said "there is a common sense that the team needs a new impulse to lead this group towards a top result at a major tournament."

They also note that they would be looking to have a new manager in place by the time they take on Spain in an international friendly in September.
