Top four finish isn't necessary for Solskjaer to keep United job | Daniel Harris

Despite sitting nine points shy of the Premier League's top-four, Daniel Harris believes Manchester United are trending in the right direction and expects Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to remain in his role as manager of the club.

Ahead of his first full season in charge of Manchester United, the prospect of a top-four finish in the Premier League would have constituted success for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

With 12 games played, however, United's record of four wins, draws and defeats has left them looking some way shy of what will be needed to qualify for next season's Champions League.

For Daniel Harris, this may not necessarily impede Solskjaer's hopes of retaining the role as manager of Manchester United.

"If United don't make the top-four," he argued on Tuesday's OTB AM, "they won't fire Solskjaer if you can see that there are signs of progress.

"As long as people can see that there is a plan and not run out of hope, it doesn't really make sense not to back the manager because you want the team to do well.

"If you look at the general picture of the last six weeks, United are starting to play quite well and definitely have the attackers to hurt any team if they can play the ball through midfield."

One aspect of how this progress can be measured is in Solskjaer's progressive approach toward promoting young talent from within the club.

Among the less-heralded of United's young prospects, Harris argued for Brandon Williams to secure his first-team spot indefinitely on the back of an impressive few weeks at left-back.

"There's nothing we've seen from Brandon Williams that suggests he isn't ready to take Ashley Young's place," explained Harris.

"He's done well in pretty much every game he's played and now it is very hard for Solskjaer to drop him.

"When those kinds of things happen, it improves the atmosphere in the team and around the ground."

With Ole Gunnar Solskjaer looking set to retain the support of the club and its fans for the time being, upcoming Premier League games against Aston Villa, Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester City will certainly test the depth of United's talent.
