Manchester United v Manchester City: Player ratings from MUFC's win

Manchester United v Manchester City saw United secure a 2-0 win in their quest for Champions League football next season.

Anthony Martial scored in the first half with a beautiful set-piece move, and an under-cooked City side looked laboured; with United not needing to do much to win.

Manchester United

David De Gea - 7

Good save from Sterling low to his left in the first-half from Sterling. Very solid throughout.

Victor Lindelof - 6

Shepherded Sterling well when he got past Wan-Bissaka, all in all a fairly solid performance.

Harry Maguire - 7

Took a little while to settle into the match, with Aguero skipping past him early in the first-half. Dispossessed in the middle of the pitch soon after and seemed a little too keen to impress himself on the game. Commanded the defence throughout and was first to most balls in the second half.

Luke Shaw - 7

Quiet but effective as an auxiliary centre-back alongside Maguire and Lindelof and dovetailed well with Brandon Williams. Put in an excellent tackle when United were under heavy City pressure towards the end of the second half.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka - 8

Looked solid down the right and limited Sterling to one shot in the first half. Very little gets past this man. Brilliant and incisive ball to Daniel James down the right opened up a dangerous opportunity.

Nemanja Matic - 7

Matic is providing a great platform, alongside Fred, for the likes of Fernandes and James to thrive. Solid defensive display but looked a little leggy towards the end.

Fred - 7

Looked lively from the outset, full of energy and running, with passing a little more incisive than usual. Booked in the second half but looked tidy.

Brandon Williams - 7

Williams typified United's performance - committed and scrappy. Brilliant prospect for United.

Bruno Fernandes - 8

Provided a brilliant assist for the first goal, with a chip from a free-kick finished by Martial. Fernandes is showing game-changing ability for United. Did well to get into the box soon after the assist but couldn't angle his body to get the header on target.

Daniel James - 6

James did well to pin back Zinchenko from the get-go, but still looks a little raw and indecisive in the final third.

Anthony Martial - 8

Scored with a brilliant improvised volley by Ederson's near post, which shows a link-up between Martial and Bruno Fernandes that United fans should savour. Put a first-half chance down Ederson's throat, when he should have done better with the shot or squared to one of United's other options. Martial put in a shift when it mattered.

Subs

McTominay: McTominay scored an unbelievable finish from 30 yards out once Ederson had put it on a plate. - 7

Manchester City

Ederson - 3

Should be desperately disappointed with the concession for Martial's goal, being beaten at his near post. He was caught out early in the first half with a passback that went under his studs, only to scramble it away from Martial. Punished in the 95th minute with McTominay's finish from outside the box.

Joao Cancelo - 6

Solid enough in a City defence that was neither outstanding or poor. Booked for tangling with Brandon Williams on the touchline.

Nicolas Otamendi - 5

Brought Daniel James down on the edge of the area to give United their first proper opportunity at goal. Missed a near post header from a corner in the 60th minute.

Fernandinho - 6

Reasonably solid as an auxiliary centre-back for City. Started a lot of their moves with intricate passing, though he had a lot of time on the ball with an occasional lack of pressing from United's forwards.

Oleksandr Zinchenko - 6

Mediocre performance today and one of the positions that you have to think Guardiola will be looking to upgrade. Benjamin Mendy was reasonably solid when he came on.

Bernardo Silva - 5

Pretty anonymous for one of the more creative components of City's attack. Substituted for Riyad Mahrez after an ineffective performance.

Rodri - 6

Booked in the middle of the second half. He and Gundogan often dawdled on the ball, even though Rodri was a solid shield for much of the match.

Ilkay Gundogan - 5

Gundogan was fairly anonymous and took too much time to pick his pass, which was a problem for City in general. Laboured.

Phil Foden - 6

Fairly tidy, if looking a touch stranded on the right for the first half and much of the second. Had an effort go high over the bar in the second half. Harried well and chased down Martial to prevent a dangerous breakaway midway through the second half.

Sergio Aguero - 6

Looked lively the whole game and had a goal disallowed by VAR early in the second half. Aguero was troubling Maguire more than Lindelof. Substituted for Gabriel Jesus in the 58th minute.

Raheem Sterling

Tested De Gea early on with a curling effort. Troubled Wan-Bissaka early on, but was almost anonymous for much of the game. A late, tame effort from straight at De Gea summed up a poor performance by his standards.
