Manchester United fans gather at Old Trafford to protest Glazer owners

It has been reported that up to hundreds of Manchester United fans have gathered at Old Trafford to protest against the club's American owners.

After a week in which the Super League was established, announced and embarrassingly abandoned again, a significant number of the fans have decided to protest against the club's owners.

Despite the involvement of 12 high-profile European clubs in the Super League plan, Manchester United's Glazer family were thought to be to the forefront of those driving the idea.

Where a smaller number of United fans gathered at the club's Carrington training ground earlier this week to protest against the family's ownership, a far bigger demonstration has developed on Saturday afternoon.

The protests follow on from similar scenes that occurred at Arsenal's Emirates Stadium in light of the club's owners participating in the Super League plans.

Throughout the day on social media scenes from outside Old Trafford - including one in which an American flag is burned within sight of the stadium - have been continually shared.

In the aftermath of the club's attempt to form the doomed breakaway league, Joel Glazer penned an open letter to Manchester United fans.

"The pandemic has thrown up so many unique challenges," it read, "and we are proud of the way Manchester United and its fans from Manchester and around the world have reacted to the enormous pressures during this period.

"We also realise that we need to better communicate with you, our fans, because you will always be at the heart of the club. In the background, you can be sure that we will be taking the necessary steps to rebuild relationships with other stakeholders across the game, with a view to working together on solutions to the long-term challenges facing the football pyramid.

"Right now, our priority is to continue to support all of our teams as they push for the strongest possible finish to the season. In closing, I would like to recognise that it is your support which makes this club so great, and we thank you for that."

That letter can be read in its entirety here.
