When things aren’t going your way, they aren’t going your way. Liverpool let a Merseyside derby win slip through their fingers at Anfield as Phil Jagielka scored a stunning injury time volley to rescue a point for Everton.
Jagielka’s goal cancelled out another fine strike, a Steven Gerrard free kick from 20 yards in the 65th minute. The captain responded to recent questions about his importance to the side with a curling free kick that Tim Howard got a hand to but couldn’t keep out.
The Reds could have doubled the lead moments later but Mario Balotelli could only hit the crossbar when presented with a glaring chance from six yards out.
Liverpool sat back and invited Everton onto them as the clock ticked towards the final whistle. A corner in stoppage resulted in the ball reaching Jagielka on the edge of the area. The centre back struck a half volley, catching the ball with the outside of his boot and sending it arcing and curling beyond Simon Mignolet and in off the underside of the bar.
The whistle sounded moments later, with Liverpool fans were left stunned in silence as their team failed to take a win for the fourth time in their opening six league games. Everton sit a point behind their neighbours, on six points.
