Mats Hummels' second half header denied Liverpool a famous victory over Borussia Dortmund this evening as the sides played out a 1-1 draw.
In what was an emotional return for Jurgen Klopp to the side he guided to two league titles and a Champions League final, Liverpool held their own and withstood a barrage of late pressure to bring a vital away goal back to Anfield.
Prior to kick-off, fans from both sides performed a stirring rendition of "You'll Never Walk Alone", an anthem adopted from by each club.
There wasn't so much contrasting styles, in fact both teams were utilising the high press to good effect and put opposition defenders under immense pressure. Mamadou Sakho and Dejan Lovren did show good composure under pressure.
The visitors showed little fear of Dortmund allowing Philippe Coutinho to pull the strings in midfield.
The opening goal came as a result of some poor defending, Mats Hummels committed to the clearing header but it was just marginally too high.
Divock Origi was alive to the situation and kept his shot low, a little knick taking it away from the Roman Weidenfeller.

Jurgen Klopp's side held out until half time, chances for Marco Reus and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang went begging.
It wouldn't be until the second half when Hummels would atone for his earlier mistake. An excellent cross into the box allowed the German centre half to rise above Adam Lallana in a comical mismatch and drive a powerful header past Simon Mignolet.

Dortmund took the initiative after this, Reus had a freekick saved while at the other end, Weidenfeller made a string of important saves to deny Coutinho.
A good result for the Premier League side with the advantage of the away goal to bring back to Anfield in a fortnight's time.
