Leeds' Samuel Saiz under investigation for match-fixing

Leeds United midfielder Samuel Saiz is one of a number of players facing a probe by Spanish police on suspicion of match-fixing according to reports in Spain.

Saiz, who is on loan with Getafe FC in the Spanish top division, signed with Leeds in 2017 making over 50 appearances for the club in two seasons.

It was originally reported on Tuesday by Spanish newspaper El Pais that the 28-year-old midfielder was arrested alongside a number of other professional footballers plying their trade in Spain.

The reports were subsequently repeated across Spanish online news sites including El Mundo but later disputed by Spanish radio station COPE who said that, while Saiz was being investigated, he had not been arrested.

Former Real Madrid defender Raul Bravo, as well as Real Valladolid's Borja Fernandez and Deportivo La Coruna's Inigo Montana are also reported to be under investigation as part of the same probe.

A press statement from the LaLiga on Tuesday said: "Today's police action follows a complaint filed by LaLiga with the Spanish authorities about possible match-fixing in a May 2018 match.

"We want to thank the National Police for the extraordinary work done to dismantle what appears to be an organised criminal group dedicated to obtaining economic benefits through the predetermination of football matches."

LaLiga's statement also added that it had informed police of the alleged match-fixing through a detailed analysis of betting patterns on the game in question.

"This police operation demonstrates the effectiveness of integrity protection systems implemented by La Liga to protect the cleanliness of all competitions in Spanish football."

The league said that it had filed eight further complaints with the General Commissioner of the Judicial Police "for alleged acts related to match-fixing" in Spanish football.

"LaLiga continues to fight to eradicate any scourge against fair play in Spanish football", the statement concluded.
