Tottenham offered up a mixed performance today in their 2-1 win over Brighton and are continuing to be punished for their shaky defence, according to Brian Kerr.
The former Republic of Ireland manager was unimpressed with Spurs’ first-half performance, with Adam Webster putting Brighton ahead after 37 minutes.
The second half was much better from the away side however, with a number of timely substitutions changing the complexion of the game.
“In fairness to Spurs, Mourinho made some changes in the second half and they were effective.
“When Eriksen came on he made the difference. The whole momentum seemed to be behind Spurs and Harry Kane scored a wonderful goal.
“And then Spurs just drove on to get the lead… There was certainly more precision and aggression and dash in the second half,” Kerr said.
While Jose Mourinho’s teams have often been defensively orientated, Spurs have been as attacking as ever since the Portuguese manager took over.
While Mourinho likely wants to make Spurs more defensively solid, Kerr believes the current crop of players are unsuited to such a gameplan.
“He’s inherited a club and a team who have never been on the brilliance of defence. They’ve always relied on the attacking play and trying to outscore the opposition.
“That’s been the tradition of Spurs. People expect them to be a front foot team going on the attack.
“It’s always been about adventurous full-backs. That’s what he’d inherited now. He’s inherited a situation with a very unreliable goalkeeper.
“The main goalkeeper is out injured. He wasn’t playing too well either Hugo Lloris but he’s out injured for a long time.
“He’s inherited this team and I think he would want to change some of the players.
“He has inherited a team that isn’t very solid but he has also inherited the traditions of the club - which is to try to score more goals even if they’re conceding against whoever the opposition is,” Kerr commented.
