'I 100% want the manager to stay' | Josh Cullen on Stephen Kenny contract

Republic of Ireland manager Stephen Kenny has gotten resounding backing from Josh Cullen who feels he should, without doubt, be offered a new contract by the FAI.

Kenny's current deal runs out next summer and he has not officially been offered a new contract although there is speculation he will get the chance to try and seal qualification for Euro 2024.

Kenny will experience a full Aviva Stadium crowd this Thursday when Ireland host Portugal in a World Cup qualifier before facing Luxembourg away on Sunday.

Although Ireland cannot qualify for next year's tournament there is keen interest in the Portugal fixture.

This is both a mixture of the lure of Christiano Ronaldo but also fans backing Kenny and the project he is working upon.

Midfielder Josh Cullen also backs him, and speaking on Monday he said he feels he should be offered a new contract.

"The progression the team has shown over the last year or so, working together has been really enjoyable.

"I probably speak on behalf of all the lads that we're fully behind the manager and believe in what he's trying to do.

"We're enjoying the style of football we're playing and we're starting to see the rewards results-wise from the performances we've been putting in so for me it's a pretty straightforward "answer.

"I 100% want the manager to stay."

As well as Cullen, Jason Knight also spoke highly of Kenny in Abbotstown on Monday afternoon.

He spoke about how he played internationally at an underage level with Kenny and how he hopes the relationship can continue.

"On a personal level, he gave me my chance.

"I was obviously with him with the U-21s and he's brought me up and gave me eight senior caps so far.

"I'm obviously really grateful for that and I want to see him continue and hopefully me continue with him."
