Giles and Robson relive their West Brom days together

First up on Off The Ball's Roadshow tonight at the Radisson Hotel Galway was Captain Marvel himself, Bryan Robson.

The ex-Manchester United leader looked back on his career and gave his assessment of new United boss Louis Van Gaal.

But he also got the chance to reminisce about his pre-United days at West Brom in the late '70s, when his former manager and Off The Ball regular John Giles joined him on stage.

"I think Bryan was one of the best [midfielders]," said John, who would know a thing or two about being an elite level midfielder.

"I was very lucky. I went as player-manager to West Brom in 1975 and Bryan was a very young player at the time who had played the previous season under Don Howe and I'd heard a lot about him. In the first few weeks I was there, Bryan didn't play all that well. I don't know for what reason. But as the season went on, we were doing well in the league in what was then the Second Divsion and he made more appearances and certainly when we got into the First Division, he was absolutely outstanding."

John revealed that he thought Robson's best position would have been in central defence, but was too valuable to play there, and Robson added that ex-Man United managers Ron Atkinson and Alex Ferguson told him something similar.

Robson also spoke about what John taught him stylistically as a young player.

The duo went on to give their tips of the Premier League season, while Robson also looked back at his time managing an exciting Middlesbrough team in the 1990s and the the balance between foreign players and English players in the top flight.
