Joe Hart set to join Tottenham on free transfer

Former Burnley and Manchester City goalkeeper Joe Hart is undergoing a medical at Tottenham Hotspur ahead of a move to the club on a free transfer.

Hart who is expected to sign a two-year deal will compete with Paulo Gazzaniga for Hugo Lloris' number one spot as goalkeeper in Jose Mourinho's squad.

The 33-year-old became a free agent after his contract came to an end at Burnley on June 30th, in a campaign where he made just three appearances in all competitions for the Clarets in 2019/20.

He started one match in the EFL Cup and two in the FA Cup, spending the season as the second-choice goalkeeper at Turf Moor behind Nick Pope.

Hart would become Tottenham's second signing of the summer transfer window, with Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg having arrived from Southampton for an undisclosed fee.

His career has seriously fallen since the arrival of Pep Guardiola to Manchester City. Guardiola did not rate the England international and as a result, he was shipped out to Torino and then West Ham United.

Hart has won two Premier League titles, two League Cups and one FA Cup during his time at Manchester City, but has struggled for form and regular first-team action in recent campaigns.

Hart told The Guardian in May, "I'm totally open. I just want to play at the highest level I can.

"In England, I don't feel I am going to be able to do that. Maybe if I hadn't achieved what I've done in this league I might not be so ready to step away.

"Don't get me wrong. I'd love to have another big chance in England, but it could be difficult."

With Europa League matches clashing with the early rounds of the EFL Cup, and new Premier League rules in which clubs must name at least eight homegrown players in their 25-man squad, Hart’s chances of game time could be very likely.
