'Jim definitely wrung the towel dry and got every last drop out of us'

After almost 15 years of stellar service, Rory Kavanagh admits he had nothing more to give to Donegal at inter-county level.

The 32-year-old midfielder joined us on the show tonight to talk about his decision to call it a day.

"It was a decision I was stewing over for the last 12 months or so. When I sat down and talked to my wife and my family, I just personally felt I couldn't give the commitment. I've a young daughter now as well and when that comes along, priorities change. I didn't want to do the thing half-heartedly as well," he explained.

Kavanagh recalled his hefty dietary and training regime under manager Jim McGuinness's four-year cycle.

"Jim definitely wrung the towel dry and got every last drop out of us," he said, recalling the journey that Donegal took from being also-rans to All-Ireland front-runners.

Looking back at the pre-McGuinness era, Kavanagh admitted: "We had a bit of a bad reputation. But that's testament to Jim and what he's done. Young boys are coming in now to an environment of winning and top class preparation with strength and conditioning coaches, everything being done the right way and tactically very good."
