'It should be rock-paper-scissors between them' - Cunningham on United's penalty dilemma

Penalty taking duties still seem to be a big issue at Manchester United but according to Kenny Cunningham, it should not be that complicated.

“For me, it should be rock-paper-scissors in the penalty box between the two players and that should resolve it.

“I think everyone is agreed that Rashford is the better penalty taker," he said.

Speaking on Monday's OTB AM , the former Birmingham City defender explained how there are times when your designated penalty taker might not be up for taking it.

"I think in the heat of the moment you have to make allowances for it. If your penalty taker is not where they need to be mentally.

“Maybe Rashford has been taken down for the penalty, maybe he has been wiped out and he gets up and he has to take the penalty.

“There’s actually a logical argument at times that yeah you have your regular penalty taker, but they might pass it on to someone else," the former Ireland international said.

Designated penalty taker

Cunningham feels that the situation at United has been overblown and it's not the first time a team has had the same problem.

“I think Arsenal had that situation a few years ago with Henry and Pires. They would literally have a discussion about it.

“So I actually don’t have a huge problem with that, yeah Pogba missed the penalty against Wolves and of course Rashford missed the one on the weekend.

“For me, it’s just been overplayed a little bit and really there is no right or wrong lads.

“Some teams have a designated penalty taker and some won’t. It will be more of a collective thing," Cunningham said.
