Ireland U21s slip up in Iceland

The Ireland Under-21s have slipped to a 1-0 loss in Iceland.

Stephen Kenny's side had gone into the away game top of their European Championship qualifying group. They had beaten unbeaten with three wins and a creditable draw against Italy in Tallaght last Thursday.

Penalty

It was a tight match. But a penalty awarded for handball on 28 minutes cost Ireland U21s dear.

Sveinn Aron Gudjohnsen - son of Chelsea and Iceland legend Eidur - stepped up to convert for Iceland. The Irish side was unable to find an equaliser as they suffered their first loss of the campaign, with Lee O'Connor also sent off in the late stages.

The Ireland U21s remain a points clear at the top of Group 1, ahead of Iceland. However third-placed Italy have a game-in-hand, three points in arrears.
