Republic of Ireland player ratings: Shootout agony but green shoots

Republic of Ireland player ratings for their heart-breaking Euro 2020 playoff penalty shootout loss to Slovakia.

Stephen Kenny has put his stamp on this team in an incredibly short period of time with the Boys in Green retaining possession in a manner highly unfamiliar to most fans watching.

Unfortunately for Ireland in a penalty shoot out, there was to be no repeat of Genoa, maybe Randolph should have worn a grey kit.

Darren Randolph  8/10

A brilliant save at the end of the first half then a little fortunate when Duffy's goalline clearance spun back to him, but usual solid self.

Matt Doherty  7/10

Much more like the Wolves version of the right-back that initiated the Coleman v Doherty debate in the first place. Missed penalty... don't say it.

Enda Stevens  7/10

Got forward well and having his Egan beside him an obvious plus. He was rarely legitimately troubled though, that had much to do with Slovak ineptitude.

Shane Duffy  9/10

A colossus, got Ireland out of jail with a goal-line clearance. Always a presence in the air and a set-piece threat, even taking a smack in the face for his efforts. developing a quality partnership with Egan.

John Egan  9/10

Developing as one of half of Ireland's twin towers. The more composed of the two in possession, made plenty of interceptions. A classy defensive rock.

Conor Hourihane 8/10

Used his excellent range of long passing throughout. A wasted a first-half free kick in a positive position was made up for when almost forcing Hamsik into an own goal. JESUS CHRIST HOW DID HE MISS THAT CHANCE THOUGH. Scored his penalty though,

James McCarthy 7/10

Constant nuisance, making plenty of tackles even if stopping Hamsik is like trying to catch eels with greasy hands. Replaced on the hour mark after picking up a knock.

Jeff Hendrick 8/10

Some nice touches and forward passes to initiate attacks in the first half, dropped deeper after McCarthy came off but kept passing well. Constantly finding pockets of space and looking to create.

James McClean  5/10

Energy, energy, energy, and more energy. It's not always clear if anything he does, good or bad is intentional. Scuffed one of Ireland's best chances. Replaced on the hour having picked up a booking borne out of frustration... you and me both James.

Callum Robinson  7/10

Always available for a pass, found plenty of pockets of space and rotated with McGoldrick well at times. Made lots of good decisions in possession but ran out of gas a little. Replaced in extra time by Callum O'Dowda.

David McGoldrick  8/10

Majestic run that led to Hourihane chance. Leader of the high press forcing plenty of errors in distribution by the Slovak keeper in particular. consistently part of Ireland's better passages of play. Emptied the tank, replaced by Long after 111 minutes.

Robbie Brady 7/10

Came on for McClean on the hour mark. Created space and linked up well with Doherty. Very positive, set up Brown chance in extra time. Scored a very cool penalty.

Alan Browne 6/10

On for McCarthy early in the second half. The second-best chance in the second half fell to him forcing a good save and got into more good attacking positions. Unlucky in extra time when hitting the post. Misery added to with missed penalty.

Callum O'Dowda came on in extra time was a constant threat, not on long enough to rate fairly.

Shane Long not on long enough for a rating.
