Ireland edge closer to FIFA rankings Top 20

The Republic of Ireland are up one place to 24th in the latest FIFA World Rankings.

Martin O'Neill's side are 44 rankings points off the Top 20 ahead of this month's resumption of the 2018 World Cup qualifiers.

2017 Africa Cup of Nations runners up Egypt occupy 20th place in the world rankings on 904 points, having risen three places in the latest placings.

Ireland rose one spot with Turkey the team to drop down two places.

 

Netherlands are just three places ahead of Ireland in 21st, with Ecuador and Iceland in between.

Argentina are still the world's top-ranked side, ahead of South American rivals Brazil.

Indeed South America is well represented in the Top 5 with Chile ranked fourth, just behind reigning World Cup winners Germany who are third.

Belgium, France, Colombia, Portugal, Uruguay and Spain occupy fifth to 10th.

Ireland's next World Cup qualifying opponents Wales are joint 12th with Poland, ahead of England and Italy who are 14th and 15th respectively.

Northern Ireland remain in 35th spot.

In August 1993, Republic of Ireland achieved the country's highest ever FIFA rankings placing with sixth.

The Boys in Green are currently top of their FIFA World Cup qualifying group with 10 points from a possible 12.
