'I want to be on the pitch as soon as possible' | Benitez keen on management return

Rafa Benitez has reiterated his desire to return to management - preferably in the Premier League.

The Spaniard, who has been in charge of Liverpool, Chelsea and Newcastle, has returned to his home near Liverpool.

He ended his period with Chinese outfit Dalian Pro in January.

Speaking in the Sunday Times today, Benitez says his 'priority' is England.

He has been linked with a number of vacant posts overseas, as well as the Celtic job.

However, he told the newspaper his wish is to get a post in England.

"The priority is England," he said.

"Why? Because obviously I like the Premier League and my family is here.

"I have a lot (of offers) from the Emirates, United States, Brazil, China, but I want to stay in Europe. And I want to stay in England."

He says he is keen to take the right role when and if it presents itself.

“If it’s the right one, we can do it tomorrow but the project, the competitive team, is not there at the moment so we have to wait. But I don’t want to stay without working.

I want to be on the pitch as soon as possible.”

Benitez departed the Premier League in 2019, ending a three-year stint with Newcastle.

He won promotion with the club from the EFL Championship in 2017.

He described his time on Tyneside as "an amazing time" and says he "suffered with the fans because they deserved more,"

"Some pundits say, ‘Oh, they ask for too much.’ No, they are a city behind the team, so they deserve something.

"I wish them all the best and want them to stay up.”

While out of work, the 60-year-old says he has been taking in as much live football as possible on television.

"My wife is complaining I am watching even more games than in the past,” he said.

“Three or four games on a Saturday, three or four on a Sunday, and on Friday or Monday or whatever.

“But there is the Premier League, Champions League, Europa League, German league, Spanish league.

"I say, ‘Look, this is my job.’"
