'I haven't heard Big Sam mention Sheringham once' - John Giles

When Sam Allardyce was asked to appoint an attacking coach in the shape of Teddy Sheringham ahead of the new season, it was almost seen as a vote of no confidence in the West Ham manager.

But John Giles has noticed that Sheringham's name has not cropped up as Big Sam basks in the glory of a fantastic start to the Premier League season.

"I'll tell you what I notice about Big Sam. At the start of the season he was instructed by the directors to get an attacking coach in and they got in Teddy Sheringham. And they have scored more goals. I haven't heard Big Sam mention Teddy Sheringham once," said John, who acknowledged Allardyce's good signings and management.

"Sheringham was a big deal at the start of the season. But I haven't heard Teddy mentioned since."

Meanwhile, John believes Manchester United are in a much better place compared to this time last season and that a resurgent Marouane Fellaini had too much expected of him when he was signed last season.

But he feels that Robin Van Persie is not the same player that he was in Alex Ferguson's final year or his own last season at Arsenal.

He also talked about the "bad buys" at Man City that are hampering the Sky Blues' title defence.

And he spoke about his "incredible" impression of high-flying Southampton who he had seen as relegation fodder after their summer business.
