'I can't make an argument for Luiz being the best centre-back in Europe'

Looking through the FIFpro XI for the best team from 2014, there seems to be one glaring inclusion.

David Luiz came out of the 2014 World Cup with his reputation diminished, yet the maverick ex-Chelsea defender managed to find himself named in the world's best XI for 2014.

Former Chelsea midfielder Pat Nevin has often told Off The Ball he is a big fan of the PSG centre-back and was surprised at the decision.

"I think there are better centre-halves out there. They wouldn't even say he was one of the top three centre-halves at Chelsea when he was there," said Pat, before talking about Luiz's role as Brazil lost 7-1 to Germany in the World Cup semi-final.

"To be fair to him, he was in the World Cup team of the tournament before that semi-final and then he had the biggest horror show in soccer history. Everybody knows where they were but only one person doesn't know where they were: David Luiz. I adore his football ability but I can't make an argument for David Luiz being the best centre-back in Europe this year."

Pat also gave his take on the other winners from the Ballon D'Or ceremony before reviewing the weekend's Premier League.
