Former Liverpool and Ireland midfielder Ray Houghton believes Steven Gerrard could have won more trophies - including the Premier League - had the Reds made the most of their potential over the years.
He and Tony Evans of The Times spoke to Off The Ball tonight about the decision to part ways.
"Liverpool could have done better over the years. I think that's one of the things that you could level against the club. Maybe they should have been competing more, certainly for the league title. There have been opportunities when they've thrown it away when they've had decent teams," said Houghton, who does feel winning the Champions League in 2005 will stand the test of time, given how difficult it is to attain.
"I think when Steven sits back and reflects on his career, he'll notice the one that's missing: The Barclays Premier League. That'll probably eat away at him a little bit. The 17 years that he was there, I really thought Liverpool would have won at least one."
While a move to the USA has been speculated, Houghton does not think that is a foregone conclusion and does not rule out that Gerrard could move to Spain or Italy rather than going to an MLS club.
Meanwhile, Evans thinks Liverpool's role should have been tailored to suit his capabilities as his age advanced.
"I think he could have been used more effectively, more sparingly in a role further forward. I've been arguing this for more than a year now. Steven wants to play more and it'll be interesting to see how his career develops after this."
He and Houghton also assessed whether Gerrard would ever have the inclination to go into management.
