Zanetti's Inter Milan longevity is remarkable

Listen to the full interview via the podcast

There was a slightly surreal scene during Javier Zanetti's final home game for Inter Milan on Saturday.

During the second half, 17-year-old Joseph Minal came on for Lazio at the San Siro and as you may remember, he is the player who looks 41.

That's the same age as Zanetti, who is ending a career which started way back in 1992, and the ex-Argentina international looks younger than the Cameroonian.

Either way, Zanetti was given a fitting send off by Inter Milan and plays his final match this weekend.

To mark the event, we spoke to James Horncastle about the end of one of the great football careers at a fairly unstable club like Inter.

"He's been at Inter since 1995. He was Massimo Moratti's first signing and he's made hundreds and hundreds of signings. So for [Zanetti] to still be at the club after so many years is remarkable. He's just a superb professional really," said Horncastle who recounted a nice anecdote about Zanetti doing fitness work at an airport while waiting to pick up friends.

Zanetti will now move upstairs to take on a club director role at Inter, but Horncastle believes the man with 145 international caps may find it hard to adjust to life behind a desk.

Will a future in management entice him? Listen to the Football Show podcast for the full interview.
