Harry Maguire dropped from England squad after guilty verdicts

Harry Maguire has been found guilty of aggravated assault in Greece.

The Manchester United captain has also been found guilty of resisting arrest, and repeated attempts of bribery.

Maguire was arrested after an incident took place outside a bar in Mykonos late last week.

The 27-year old had denied all charges.

Lawyers for Maguire told the court that two Albanian men approaches his sister, Daisy, proceeded to inject her with an unknown substance which led to her fainting.

They continued that instead of being brought to the hospital, Maguire's party were taken to a police station where officers allegedly kicked Maguire in the leg, telling him "your career is over".

The prosecution alleged that while at the police station following the incident, Maguire told the police, "Do you know who I am? I am the captain of Manchester United, I am very rich, I can give you money, I can pay you, please let us go."

Earlier on Tuesday, Maguire was included in the England squad for their UEFA Nations League games next month with Iceland and Denmark.

With the threat of conviction hanging over Maguire, England manager Gareth Southgate hailed the defender's "outstanding character".

Southgate explained the former Leicester City and Hull City man's inclusion, saying, "It's clearly a decision that is not straightforward and a decision that, in the end, I can only take on the information I have.

"I've spoken with Harry, I have insight to the story which is very different to what's been reported.

"In these instances, you can only make decisions based on facts that you're aware of. Now, clearly, if facts or information change further down the line, I have to review that decision.

"I have a fantastic relationship with the boy. Harry has been an outstanding character for us.

"I have no reason to doubt what he is telling me. It's important he knows that he's got my support at this moment."
