'It's Wayne Rooney or Daniel Sturridge and not both'

Almost in spite of mounting criticism, England traveled to the foothills of the Alps tonight and beat Switzerland 2-0 in Basel in their Euro 2016 qualifier.

Arsenal's new signing Danny Welbeck scored both goals to excite the Gooners and to slightly dispel the gloom floating around Roy Hodgson's side after a dismal World Cup in Brazil.

But was it a good performance?

The Guardian contributor Daniel Harris joined us on tonight's show and he pointed a few key issues.

"It was a good performance for England. It wasn't good relative to a good team. I think there were two main things to me that were very obvious, that may have been obvious before. One of them is that it's Wayne Rooney or Daniel Sturridge and not both and the other one is that they need three men in midfield as they had today pretty much," said Harris who feels not having Steven Gerrard's absence was a positive in front of the "dodgy" back four.

He thinks Rooney is aware that his powers are on the wane, although Harris felt his performance was better than usual thanks to having pace around him.
