As 10-man Manchester City imploded against Wolves at Molineux on Friday night, City manager Pep Guardiola seemed to concede that the title race with Liverpool is over.
The Republic of Ireland's Matt Doherty scored the winner in the 89th minute as Nuno Espirito Santo's side came from behind to produce a stunning 3-2 comeback.
Liverpool are now 13 points clear of Leicester City with Manchester City third and a point behind the Foxes.
Guardiola suggested that his side had missed their chance to keep the race to the top alive.
"We are used to being at the top and now we are far away so we have to adjust mentally to that.
"I said many times it is unrealistic to think about Liverpool; we need to think about Leicester. Now it is about trying to catch the second one. We had the chance to return to second but we remain third.
"It's difficult in the Premier League, but especially this side. We took advantage, but we could not defend it. They fought incredibly, ran even in the last minutes, we conceded the goals but we could've avoided them.
"The team fought, I've got no regrets, they did everything to defend the result. We have to play 11 against 11 in that level. You can always avoid conceding, but sometimes it's fatigue, it's tiredness, it's a lot of minutes to defend and it's difficult sometimes.
Matt Doherty was in better form at full-time as the defender described how important and emotional the night was to the home side.
"[It's] Pretty special considering they were 2-0 up at one point.
"To come back was unbelievable, it sums up the form we're in at the moment where we never give up.
I was disappointed we managed to go two goals down considering they had 10 men; we should have made the game easier for ourselves.
I guess though nobody really cares once you win the game and we managed to do that in the end.
