'The scariest day ever' | Glenn Hoddle & Harry Redknapp on Hoddle's heart attack

Glenn Hoddle and Harry Redknapp told Off The Ball about the day Hoddle went into cardiac arrest at the BT Sport studios.

It was October 2018, where the former Tottenham managers were working as pundits for the weekend's action.

"I was stood next to Glenn. It was the scariest day ever," recalled Redknapp at OTB Sports' Cadbury FC roadshow.

"We were just going to get a cup of tea and just heard a thud. I just looked around and everyone was shouting 'Glenn!' - and there was Glenn.

"We didn't have a clue what to do, it was a scary situation.

"Then this amazing man [Simon Daniels - sound supervisor at BT Sport] came down from the sound department, he came running down and basically saved Glenn's life.

"The rest of us didn't have a clue about what to do in a situation like that. Thankfully, this man was there."

Hoddle spoke about the inevitable bond built with Daniels in the months and years following his collapse and recovery.

"It was amazing what he did for me, Harry," Hoddle said.

"I was out of it, so you guys went through the trauma of it, because if it had been somebody else then it would have been traumatic for me - but I knew nothing about it.

"I spoke with Simon yesterday - he saved my life. It is as easy as that - I wouldn't be sitting here. That is why CPR is so important."

Memories

"The funny thing about the day - well, funniest - is that after I came back around after the cardiac arrest and the quadruple bypass, I could only remember four things.

"They were shutting the door to my driver in the morning, saying 'I'll see you at 5:30 pm'. I could remember [Paul Ince] and Robbie Savage giving me a birthday cake because it was my birthday.

"When you think about it, what a gift Simon Daniels gave me on that day.

"The third one was, as I said to my family, I remember seeing a lizard! They all looked at each other and thought 'He's on the morphine..'

"Then, about a week later, they came back in and found out from my agent that I had seen a lizard on the show. So because Harry was going into the jungle, they brought in a lizard and a snake!

"They are the only things that I remember. I thought I'd lost the plot!"

No warning

"They brought in a load of stuff to see if we were scared of them," tallies Redknapp.

"There was no warning whatsoever, I said to you that you looked so well, you'd been out golfing that week."

"The reason I tell people to get checked up is that I felt great. [Harry and I] did the show together.

"That is what was such a shock afterwards, when it all happened. There were no signs, and that was a bit scary for everyone.

"That you can be going so well and then this happens internally."
