David Ginola will today announce that he is running for the FIFA presidency, according to reports.
The former Tottenham and Newcastle winger is due to hold a press conference to declare that he will bid to oust Sepp Blatter from world football's highest office.
"It is time that football was refreshed," Ginola told The Sun. "We want transparency so that everyone knows where every penny goes. People need to be able to trust the decisions being made by those in charge."
It's not clear whether the Frenchman actually qualifies to challenge. He needs the backing of five national football associations by January 29.
"I'm doing this because I believe I can make a difference," he added. "I'm always being asked questions about what is needed to change FIFA. Well now I'm going to do something about it."
To say Ginola's candidacy is from left-field is putting it mildly, and it remains to be seen if it is indeed authentic. As anyone who remembers the 1998/99 PFA Player of the Year's hoax documentary David Ginola: Secrets & Lies (2004) will attest, even in retirement the former France international is still a master at selling a dummy.
