John Giles on why he's betting on Giggs to take Man United job until season's end

John Giles does not expect Louis van Gaal to stay in his position until the end of the season at Manchester United.

And his bet is that assistant Ryan Giggs will take on the manager's job in a caretaker role.

John joined us on Off The Ball towards the end of tonight's disappointing 2-1 defeat at Danish side FC Midtjylland in their Europa League first leg tie.

Despite being part of the coaching setup, John feels Giggs has managed to keep a relative distance from Van Gaal and the problems at the club, which could play into his hands if he is in the running to take over until the end of the season.

"If Van Gaal goes and goes soon, because [Giggs] has not been associated with him or hasn't been part of the setup, I think they would give him the job until the end of the season," said John, who has question marks about where the Jose Mourinho "done deal" to Man United stories are coming from.

"My bet would be Giggs takes over until the end of the season."

But he does feel that Giggs should go away from Old Trafford and prove his credentials, contrasting it with Pep Guardiola's extremely successful promotion at FC Barcelona: "It is possible for Giggs to be another Guardiola, but it's very unusual."
