Speaking shortly after his surgery in 2000, Souness said:
'I went to America and had some treatment that is making me feel even better. I feel like I could be playing again — like a 19-year-old. There was nothing actually wrong with my heart, it was the arteries leading to it. Something in me allows fat to build up in the arteries and doesn’t clear it away.'
Souness was central to Liverpool's successful era during the 80's in which he won five Premier League titles and three European Cups with the reds. He later transferred to Sampdoria in 1984.
He went on to excel as a manager. He led Rangers to three successive titles in the mid 80's as a player-manager and guided Liverpool to an FA Cup in 1991.
