FIFA President Gianni Infantino believes video technology is "inevitable" in football

Gianni Infantino believes that the introduction of video technology to football is inevitable, and would be open to trialing it in the English game.

The new FIFA President, who was elected recently as the successor to the disgraced Sepp Blatter, was speaking in Cardiff ahead of the  International Football Association Board's (IFAB) Annual General Meeting on Saturday.

With reports that FA chief executive Martin Glenn and representatives from the Scottish FA are keen on trialing it over the course of the next two years, Infantino stated that "I hope we see trials in as many places as possible in the world but also in England and Scotland".

"I would like everyone to have an open mind about these things without prejudging what the results at the end will be," said Infantino. "The recommendation is that this moves forward [...] Sooner or later it will be inevitable. Let's start to do something sooner rather than later".

Infantino added that "we cannot close our eyes to progress" and that football must look forward, but that it may take "a few more years to reach the right solution" for the game with regard to technology.

Also on the agenda at Saturday's meeting are the possibility of introducing a fourth substitute for teams in cup competitions that go to extra-time or penalties, as well as the potential trial of a sin-bin.
