It turned out to be a year to forget for Barcelona and that was confirmed this weekend as they let the La Liga title slip into Atletico Madrid's hands.
It is likely to precipitate major changes at the club. That process of change has already started with the confirmation that Luis Enrique will take over the managerial job from the outgoing Tata Martino.
To discuss Barcelona's plans for the summer, we were joined by Sky Sports La Liga pundit Guillem Balague who was not surprised by the appointment of the former Barca B manager.
"It's quite clear that he is the man that Barcelona need because he is a bit of Pep Guardiola and defends the same brand of football and he knows the club very well. He's also got a bit of Jose Mourinho because he is going to cut heads," said Balague, who also explained how Pep Guardiola stole Enrique's thunder in a manner of speaking.
Balague said Enrique is a "strong-minded" and direct man who has a touch of Van Gaal's spikiness with the press, but may also try to sign a traditional No 9.
Balague also name-checked Javier Mascherano, Cesc Fabregas, Alex Song and Adriano who could face the axe as Barcelona attempt to cull as many as 11 players from the first-team squad.
