Shamrock Rovers members approve €2 million Desmond investment

Billionaire Dermot Desmond will take control of a 25% stake in Shamrock Rovers after a vote of the club's members.

Desmond's investment is reported to be worth €2 million to the Tallaght club after the move was overwhelmingly supported by members.

The deal when finalised will mean the members will now control 50% of the FAI Cup winning club, Sydney-based businessman Ray Wilson will hold control of the remaining 25% of the club.

“Shamrock Rovers Members today voted in favour of accepting an investment proposal by Dermot Desmond to become a shareholder in Shamrock Rovers F.C,” a statement from the club explained.

“Club members gathered at the 2019 AGM in Tallaght Stadium today where the proposal recommended by the Members’ Board was put to the membership.

“There was an overwhelming vote in support of the proposal which, subject to final sign off by all parties will see Dermot Desmond become a 25% shareholder in Shamrock Rovers FC Ltd.”

Desmond is also the current largest individual shareholder of Scottish club Celtic FC.

The businessman was born in Cork but grew up in Marino, Dublin before beginning a career in banking. Today he is one of Ireland's richest men and has a long history of investing in sport.

Desmond has owned successful racehorses in the past and was an investor of Manchester United before selling his stake to Malcolm Glazer in 2005.
