Manchester City benefit from defensive mistake to draw in Paris

Manchester City midfielder Fernando had an evening to forget as the Premier League side managed to squeeze out at 2-2 draw against Paris Saint-Germain at Parc des Princes.

His defensive howler on 41 minutes allowed PSG back into the game, after Kevin de Bruyne opened the scoring for the visitors.

It was an encounter strewn with defensive errors, with the majority of goals coming as a result of poor defending.

De Bruyne, still aiming to regain full fitness, opened the scoring on 38 minutes after Fernandinho picked up on a loose Blaise Matuidi pass. He sprayed it wide for the Belgian international, who's low shot beat  Kevin Trapp all ends up.

Up to that point, PSG had had the better of the possession and almost certainly the better of the chances.

David Luiz was deemed to have been fouled in the box on 14 minutes but Zlatan Ibrahimovic couldn't convert as Joe Hart got down smartly to turn the effort.

Ibrahimovic then had the opportunity to atone for his error after Di Maria slipped him through one-on-one with the keeper, but he sent his effort over the bar.

He did show his poaching quality before the break, when a short kick-out from Hart wasn't sufficiently cleared by Fernando and the ball nipped of the Swede's toe and into the net.

Matuidi had an excellent chance to put his side in ahead at the break however he couldn't keep his cross down for the onrushing Edinson Cavani to meet.

Cavani looked threatening throughout the second period as he made the push higher up the pitch before Adrien Rabiot gave the home side the lead.

Manchester City couldn't clear from the corner and Rabiot was alive to the danger to latch on the end of Hart's weak save.

For the most part the French champions then looked in pushed for a third goal to give them a greater cushion heading into the return leg in a fortnight's time.

It was against the run of play that Fernandinho scored a vital second away goal.

The Brazilian latched onto the end of a half-clearance in the PSG box and his shot was deflected past Trapp.

Poor performances from both sides were typified by the defensive errors and Manchester City will count themselves lucky to be in the tie.

Still, on paper it is a good result for the Premier League side and they arguably have one foot in the semi-final should they minimise PSG's attacking threat when they visit the Etihad.
