Craig Cathcart's goal against Wales ended an unwanted record for Northern Ireland

Northern Ireland's draw with Wales on Thursday night ended an unwanted record for Martin O'Neill's side.

Up until Craig Cathcart's goal in the second half at the Cardiff City Stadium, Northern Ireland had not scored an away goal in a friendly since August 2006. In that game, David Healy and Kyle Lafferty both scored in a 2-1 win in Helsinki against Finland.

The run of 15 games included games against Scotland, Italy, Albania, Turkey, Chile, Montenegro, Republic of Ireland, Wales, Netherlands, Malta, Turkey, Cyprus, Uruguay, Chile and Scotland. Of those 15 games, only three were scoreless draws.

Cathcart opened the scoring in the game in Cardiff, before Wales equalised with a penalty late in the game.

The draw means that Northern Ireland are now unbeaten in nine games, a new record. The result matches the record of Billy Bingham’s team.

Michael O'Neill's side play Slovenia in Belfast on Monday night.
