Chris Wilder hopes Sheffield United can build upon first win of the season

Chris Wilder and his Sheffield United side finally got their first win of the season after a 3-2 win over Bristol Rovers in the FA Cup on Saturday.

Oliver Burke and Jayden Bogle both found the back of the net for the Blades in the third round tie, with Bristol keeper Joe Day also scoring an own goal.

Wilder and his players have been on a terrible run in the Premier League and they sit bottom of the table with just two points from two draws in 17 games.

Speaking to Sheffield United TV after the game he said it was vital to get a win on Saturday afternoon.

"That was the objective coming into today, I'm pleased for the players and most importantly pleased for the supporters.

"The performance today wasn't a free-flowing one, this was always going to be a tough cup tie, FA Cup third round away from home, a team not in form at all against a team with nothing to lose, and we had everything to lose today.

"There was a good attitude about the players, we were a little bit disappointed about the two goals, especially when we went 2-1 up.

"I think you've got to give credit to Bristol, especially for their second goal, it was a great ball in.

"This was a big day for us today, because of previous what's happened and after a tough week as well.

"This was a big fixture and a big result, hopefully we can build on it.

"The consequences of not getting a result today would have really impacted on the group, and they've took a lot.

"The players in the group, the majority of them played in the Championship when we went up and there's some young players out there as well, and when you don't get results that does test everybody out so the challenge was, regardless of the performance was to get a win which we've done and I think we've played ok to well today."

Sheffield have been plagued with injuries since the start of the season and have also recently been hit with a Covid-19 outbreak amongst their squad.

Wilder said they can't use this as an excuse and hopes this result will be the beginning of them turning things around.

"In my four and a half years here, regarding the injuries, I'm scratching my head.

"In my 20 years as a manager I've never had an injury list like this, and the manner of the injuries as well but you have to battle through it and we've battled through and I'm pleased for the players because of the situation we're in and more importantly the supporters.

"They needed it, we all needed it and we've got the result."
