Ched Evans to train this week with Sheffield United, one month after his release from prison

Sheffield United have agreed to let Ched Evans train with them later this week, following his release from prison last month.

Evans was released from Wymott prison in October after serving half of his five-year sentence for the rape of a 19 year old woman in 2011.

The BBC reports that the player has the backing of the Professional Footballers Association and the club's board, who both believe that he has the right to make a new start.

Manager Nigel Clough has said that Evans is not yet guaranteed a new contract, and that this will be a matter for the owners to decide.

Evans released a video statement on his website which outlined his desire to continue his footballing career.

"It is a rare and extraordinary privilege to be permitted to play professional football. It is my hope that I will be able to return," he said.

"If that is possible then I will do so with humility having learned a very painful lesson.

"I would like a second chance but I know not everyone would agree."

A Change.org petition to prevent Sheffield from taking Evans back has now reached over 150,000 signatures, and many women's organisations have opposed any decision to re-sign him to the club.

Evans continues to maintain his innocence, claiming that he had sex with the woman but that it was consensual.
