Thomond Park looks set to host a Celtic-Inter Milan July friendly

Inter Milan look set to come to Ireland this summer to play Celtic in a friendly in Limerick.

According to The Sun, the Italian giants will play in Thomond Park as part of the International Champions Cup event that is taking place across North America, Europe, China and Australia.

The game will be Celtic's second in a fortnight in Ireland. They have already been pencilled in to play Barcelona in the Aviva Stadium on July 30th.

The International Champions Cup website has the game advertised to take place on August 13th but the venue is yet to be confirmed. Celtic's Scottish Premiership season begins the week before, but the current champions are allowed postpone an early league fixture to take part in a glamour friendly.

The two teams met in Dublin in 2011 as part of the Dublin Super Cup where Inter Milan won 2-0. Their most famous clash came in 1967, when Celtic defeated Inter in the European Cup final in Lisbon.

The match will add to Thomond Park's recent history of matches with a round-ball since the stadium's redevelopment. In 2009, the Republic of Ireland team played Australia and South Africa in two friendlies while the Aviva Stadium was being redeveloped.

Local League of Ireland side Limerick FC played in the stadium for two-and-a-half seasons from 2013 to 2015 when Market's Field was being redeveloped.

Once the news is confirmed, it will mark an exciting fortnight for fans of Celtic in Ireland as the team will play twice in Ireland as their Scottish Premiership preparations continue.
