Fabio Carvalho reportedly signing for Liverpool

Liverpool are set to sign Fabio Carvalho from Fulham.

Liverpool have agreed a fee with Fulham for bright young attacking talent Fabio Carvalho.

The 19-year-old was born in Portugal but has represented England at youth level. He has played 18 games for Fulham in the Championship this season and scored seven goals with four assists. Should Liverpool's deal with Fulham go through before the 11pm deadline, he is expected to return to the Championship on loan for the remainder of the season.

Carvalho will join Luis Diaz as Liverpool's second signing of the January transfer window if the deal gets done.

Initially, the reported price was £5 million but later reports suggested Fulham stood strong to push the price towards £7 million. It's a lot of money for a 19-year-old, especially one who is out of contract in a matter of months. But there is strong competition for Carvalho, so the value for Liverpool locking him up now will assure he is their player long-term.

Jurgen Klopp's Liverpool have developed young players with great success, but Carvalho will stay at Fulham. That means his development will be closer to the path of Harvey Eliott, who was a key player for the first team despite his tender age before breaking his ankle earlier this season.

Carvalho's quality pushed the deal through. The fact that he has been an effective Championship player allays some fears. He is already playing at a relatively high level so the transition to the Premier League should be less intimidating. Fabrizio Romano reports that Carvalho will sign a five-year deal.

Along with his talent, Carvalho will also count as a homegrown player in England.
