Cameroon midfielder Patrick Ekeng dies after collapsing on the pitch in Romania

Cameroon international Patrick Ekeng died on Friday night after collapsing on the pitch while playing for club side Dinamo Bucharest.

The 26-year-old collapsed while playing against Viitorul in Bucharest. After being treated on the pitch by medics. Ekeng was transferred to a local hopsital in the Romanian capital before he was pronounced dead hours later.

The midfielder made his senior debut for Cameroon last year and made two appearances for the country. He was part of the squad that competed in the African Cup of Nations, but did not feature in the games.

Ekeng joined Dinamo Bucharest in January from Spanish side Cordoba. He was part of the team that was relegated from La Liga last year as the Andalusian side finished at the bottom of the table.

The death is tragically similar to what happened to former Cameroon player Marc-Vivien Foe in 2003. The midfielder collapsed on the pitch during a Confederations Cup semi-final against Colombia, before being pronounced dead hours later.
