As one of the longest transfer chases of the January window comes to an end, The Football Show discussed whether Bruno Fernandes would prove value for Manchester United.
Mark Critchley of The Independent is 'sceptical' that Fernandes will provide value for the reported €55m transfer fee, and spoke about whether this is a coup for United CEO Ed Woodward.
"With negotiation, there is a view that good negotiation is done quickly.
"But a lot of these things go down to the wire because if you have a hardened stance in a valuation of a player, and that player fails, then people turn around and tell you that you spent too much money.
"We have seen that happen plenty times at United over the years, and Ed Woodward criticised for it - so United are wary of that.
"This deal could ultimately go up to €80m, but from what I understand from United that is unlikely. They feel that the €55m to €65m that they will spend will likely represent value for the level of player they are getting."
Bruno Fernandes
"Ed Woodward's critics would think that, and I have been among his critics. But there are certain things that crop during a deal and that was one of them.
"What will determine the success of this deal is whether Bruno Fernandes plays well for Manchester United, and be the transforming force that many people have hyped him up to be.
"I'm sceptical of that myself but ultimately if it results in an upturn in form and eases the pressure on Solskjaer, then it will be seen as a success."
