Bruised Brady a concern ahead of Ireland's Euro 2020 playoff

Robbie Brady has emerged as an injury concern ahead of the Republic of Ireland's Euro 2020 playoff with Slovakia.

Stephen Kenny's side are due to play their semi-final in Bratislava on October 8.

Brady was replaced by Erik Pieters five-minutes from the break in Burnley's 4-2 defeat away to Leicester City in the Premier League on Saturday.

"With Robbie, we think it’s bruised ribs and they can be sore," his manager Sean Dyche said after the game.

"He’s been carrying it since being away with the national side, and unfortunately got a bang on it again tonight, so we made that decision early.

"It’s a shame for him because he’s had a tough one with injuries, so we’ll see how that settles down, but it’s another challenge."

The Leicester game was Brady's first Premier League start since New Year's Day.

Dyche was full of praise, however, for Jimmy Dunne who marked his senior debut for Burnley with a goal at the King Power.

"He is a young centre half who has come a long way in recent years and to be out there in the Premier League is brilliant," the Clarets boss said.

“It’s a tough position to learn the game and it does often come later to centre backs, but he did well tonight. It’s a tough night defensively in terms of goals, but he stuck at it and nicked himself a really good goal too, so we are delighted for him.”

Drogheda native Dunne said scoring a goal in England's top-flight was somewhat "overwhelming".

The Republic of Ireland U21 defender added, " I’m very lucky to have the experienced players around me at the club who often talk to me and lead me through it, so I’m very fortunate to have that.

“The gaffer was a centre-back and I’ve got James Tarkowski, Ben Mee – the skipper – and I get to play alongside an Irish international in Longy, so I’m very fortunate in that way. I’ve got all the guidance I need.

“It’s difficult for young players and probably especially for defenders to get opportunities at this level so you have to take them when they come.

“The squad is tight a bit at the minute with injuries and lack of numbers which does provide opportunities for me to get in there and show what I’m made of.”
