Brazilian footballer Bernardo Ribeiro has passed away after falling ill during a game for his side Friburguense in the Rio State Championship.
O Globo reports that the former Newcastle Jets player was substituted during the game on Saturday, and was rushed to hospital in an ambulance from the stadium.
Ribeiro was not the only footballer to pass away during the past few days either, as Dinamo Bucharest’s Patrick Ekeng passed away after collapsing during a league match against Viitorul Constanta.
Furthermore, in Cameroon, goalkeeper Jeanine Christelle Djomnang also tragically passed away yesterday. She was set to take to the field for the Femina Stars’s fixture against Louves of Minproff in a match in Southern Cameroon when she collapsed during the warm-up.
She was rushed to hospital where she was later pronounced dead. It is thought Djomnang had suffered a heart attack but Cameroon Football Federation (Fecafoot) said it is now awaiting a formal medical report.
Cameroon's African Women Footballer of the Year Gaelle Enganamouit took to social media to express her sympathies.
"It's with sadness that I have learnt of the death of my team-mate Djomnang Jeanine Christelle of Femina Stars Ebolowa, may her soul rest in peace," she wrote on social media.
