The usually raucous Westfalenstadion in Dortmund fell silent during today's Bundesliga clash between home side Borussia Dortmund and Mainz after news of the passing of a fan made its way around the venue.
A Dortmund fan passed away after falling ill in the stands during today's 2-0 win for the home team, while another supporter was also hospitalised in separate incidents.
Dortmund confirmed in a statement after the match that: "During the game, there were two tragic incidents in the stadium where two spectators had to be resuscitated. One person did not manage to recover and died. We are full of sadness and our thoughts are with their families. We got a message from the hospital that the status of the second person is apparently stable".
The news filtered through to supporters of Dortmund and Mainz, leading to a subdued atmosphere for the remainder of the match, while players and supporters also paid tribute to the fan who passed away following the full-time whistle as a show of respect.
