Bastian Schweinsteiger will play no further part in Manchester United's season, manager Louis van Gaal confirmed today.
The 31-year-old has been sidelined with a knee ligament injury that he sustained on international duty last month.
"I don't think Schweinsteiger shall play this season. I think, next season, he is prepared,” said Van Gaal.
Maybe he is prepared for the European Championship, I cannot predict. It is possible, but then that is also in our favour because then he is fit for the new competition."
The German has only started 21 games this season for Manchester United and has failed to make a big impact since his arrival in the summer.
He has only netted once for United, during their 1-1 draw with Leicester at the King Power Stadium.
