AUDIO: When cinema does football a service ... and disservice

Naturally, when you work on a show like Team 33, you automatically love football. But Richard, Joe and I are also big films fans.

Unfortunately those twin hobbies can rarely mix, given the long history of terrible attempts to portray football on film and TV,

This week, that is what we focused on, each picking out the few football films we have enjoyed and the many ones that should have been left on the cutting room floor.

So, ever heard of A Shot At Glory starring ex-Rangers striker and manager Ally McCoist? Richard explains why even the presence of Robert Duvall and Michael 'Batman turned Birdman' Keaton cannot improve that flick.

Seeing as Joe and I have never set eyes on former Sky One TV series Dream Team, Richard also runs us through some of the most outlandish storylines (which all seem to include varying forms of murder) from that show and its unlucky fictional football team, Harchester United.

Escape To Victory remains a classic so Joe takes us down memory lane, as well as taking us back to his childhood watching '90s football cartoon Hurricanes. He takes us through characters like manager Jock Stone (based on legendary Celtic chief Jock Stein) as well as some of the repetitive storylines.

For my part, I explain why mockumentary Mike Bassett: England Manager starring Ricky Tomlinson is one of the few football films to pass mustard, unlike the Goal! trilogy which I do my best to erase from memory via audio clips.

Plus there are honourable mentions for the likes of When Saturday Comes, The Arsenal Stadium Mystery and The Damned United.
