AUDIO: United fans in for a ‘bumpy’ ride

Phil Thompson told Ivan on Breakfast that Louis van Gaal needs more time to embed his philosophy at Manchester United after yesterday’s defeat by Southampton at Old Trafford.

Van Gaal’s side were leapfrogged by Saints into third place after their 1-0 loss at Old Trafford left the Dutchman on 37 points after 21 Premier League games – the exact same as his much-maligned predecessor, David Moyes.

Sky Sports pundit Thompson said: “Until he sorts out his defence this is always going to be likely ... the defence is just not good enough. (David) De Gea cannot continue to thwart all attackers.

“They’re a good team, not a great team ... and it will take time and it will be bumpy.”

The former Liverpool captain also reckons Radamel Falcao will leave United. He said: “I do (think he’ll leave). They want other people to take him off their hands. I don’t think he’s fitting in there.”

Thompson admitted that he’s “jealous” Manchester City are signing Wilfried Bony from Swansea, and not Liverpool.

He also tipped Southampton to make the Top Four.
