It was not a great night for Arsenal nor Liverpool last night, with the Reds at least claiming three points with their 2-1 win over Ludogorets at Anfield.
It was a far worse night for the Gunners, who have been roundly criticised this morning in the wake of their 2-0 defeat to Borussia Dortmund in Germany.
Arsenal only registered one shot on target and failed to win a single tackle inside the Dortmund half.
Danny Welbeck is still awaiting his first goal for the Gunners – a wait made all the worse for having missed three good chances last night. Despite this, Arsenal manager Arsène Wenger says he's pleased with the former Manchester United forward’s performance.
In Anfield, Liverpool faced stiffer competition than expected from Bulgarian side Ludogorets.
The Eagles had beaten Dynamo Zagreb, PSV Eindhoven and Odessa away in the Europa League last year, so their solid display at Anfield should not really have come as that much of a surprise.
Mario Balotelli got his first goal for Liverpool as they won 2-1, though it took Steven Gerrard’s injury-time penalty to secure the win, with Ludogoret’s newly-signed keeper making a terrible error that handed Liverpool three points.
Brendan Rodgers was up beat when discussing the performance after the match, and you can hear his comments here:
