Shane Ryan forced to withdraw from favourite event due to shoulder issue

Irish swimmer Shane Ryan has been forced to withdraw from Sunday's 100-metres men's backstroke due to injury.

Team Ireland say the former world medallist has been suffering from "persistent shoulder pain" which is "specific to this particular stroke"

"The decision was made in consultation with the Team Ireland swimming and medical staff in Tokyo," Team Ireland confirmed in a statement.

"He will, however, still compete in the men’s 100m butterfly and the men’s 4 x 200m freestyle relay."

The Pennsylvania-native, who qualifies for Ireland through his Laois father, has previously won European and World championship medals in the backstroke.

Ryan also reached the semi-finals of the 100-metres backstroke at the 2016 Olympics in Rio.

Indeed are proud to support Team Ireland at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. Indeed believes the world works better when people are given every opportunity to unleash their true talents. #TalentUnleashed
